Hi Steve,

Well as Remy says it's not likely to happen.

Don't get me wrong I wish it would however the Indy pit crew (Thats Remy and
a few others) are unlikely to implement this.

To my understanding (Remy will correct me if I'm wrong) the code is shared
to members of the Indy pit crew from one location - IE the server, and they
work on it remotely.. or lock it, download it, work on it, upload and unlock
it. Now unfortunately, to change that would undoubtedly mean a MAJOR change
in the way the team does things (I think..).

There's also a 2nd reason why this hasn't been done from my side of things.
Although I'm one of 5 or 6 webmasters (and probably the only slightly active
one) our hands are tied. The software which is used for the site (also
created by the same people from my understanding), doesn't give us the
ability to manage the actual download files (EG the .zip files) because they
are stored on seperate servers. We only have access to the actual web pages,
templates, directories etc. I have no ability to manage the downloadable
files. That is down to the indy pit crew and so while I do agree with your
idea of having a monthly stable download, I can not implement it myself. I'm
reluctant to push this issue with Remy or Chad (The creator of Indy in it's
early days) as these are VERY busy people and they maintain and work on Indy
free as volunteers (I think it's actually more of a hobby though I'm sure
Remy will never admit it!). They are also professional programmers who have
many other projects on the go and other clients to keep happy. Indy is very
high quality source for anyone to use and is cross platform with no
dependancies to rely on. A project the size of Indy can't be easy to
maintain, update, and still meet it's key objectives of being free and cross
platform. I admit it's very frustrating but the Indy guys have their tried
and tested way of working and so far, somehow, they've managed to keep the
project going all these years using it!

It might be a possibility for me to download it once a month, upload it to
the site (or another server) and then link to that from the indy website.
This would also bring about it's problems though as the Indy crew would need
to let me know when each update is stable and then I'd need to grab it at
the very same time. With time differences between countries, I might not
grab it until 24 hrs later. I've never put this forward to the pit crew for
the main reason I don't think they'd like the idea. It would basically be
the same as publishing a stable version - something which they've been set
against all along.

I will speak to Chad about this at some point on Skype but for the
forseeable future, I don't see this being changed.

In the meantime, if you don't need ultra advanced components (EG like
TIdDNSServer), then Indy 9 is a pretty mean substitue and it is very rarely
in a non-compilable state. It's basically a finished product which they no
longer work on except for the od bug fix which occassionally crops up. I use
it, and it's certainly one up from version 8 ;)

Regards,

Jamie

PS, I also have Indy 10 from a download of about 2 months ago. It compiled
without any errors - If you want it, let me know.
