I am working on a mobile application that needs to send and receive small
amounts of data in real-time. Basically a vehicle needs to have a laptop
updated a few times a day with small packets of data representing one record
(maybe 10 a day) and it needs to send small packets back to an email
address.
Can SMS messaging be used reliably for such a limited conversation? Cellular
internet connections are very cost prohibitive for this application. A small
program would check an email box regularly for messages and use that mailbox
for sending to the remote device.
Would one shop for hardware and a carrier to do this first and then
determine capabilities? What would I ask the carriers? This application
would be used in Canada, but I am not certain of the exact locations.
I would need an interface from a laptop to the device to send and receive
emails and no voice data would really be necessary.
Thanks for any ideas, links or even keywords for a Google search.
