Best way to implement a mechanism to download or obtain configuration settings f

i want to download some configuration settings to my application (basically,
all the info to connect to a firebird database, without the user needing to
worry about the db path, username etc etc, my application fills this in
automatically)

i'm just wondering what the best approach would be to implement this?

shall i implement it using sockets or something like ftp?

and if using sockets, what is the best way to do this?

any insights really appreciated.
