expiring domain names advice?

Subject:expiring domain names advice?

I just found that the domain name of a site I've often visited expired on
July 17. It's status is now listed as "pending delete restorable" & "on
hold." I'm very surprised that it's expired - the site's been around for 7
years. It has pretty low traffic, though, & a PR of 4.

If the site is really permanently down for the count, I could really use the
domain as it closely relates to one of my sites.

Once, a couple years ago, I successfully got an expiring domain name by
back-ordering it from GoDaddy.com.

But - is that still the best way to get the domain name if it expires? I
know there are other such services, but haven't used any of them.

I don't know if there'd be much competition for the domain name or not. It's
a plural dictionary word but not commonly used by most people (relates to a
specific field). I don't know that there would be a huge demand for it, but
there may be other folks out there who would be interested.

Your thoughts would be appreciated! :-)

best,
Denise
