I'd really appreciate some advice.

I am in the process of moving my commercial website (dealing in
collectables) to a new host's server (my previous host, Spenix, has
just quit trading).

At the same time, I am thinking of changing my website's domain name
to something more descriptive of what I do. The site's contents will
remain the same.

Over the years, my site has earned good ranking in the main search
engines, partly through having many links from other sites. I don't
want to lose that good positioning. WIll I have to lose that advantage
if I change the website's domain name?

My plan was to move the site to the new host's server under the new
domain name (let's call it "new-domain.com"), then have the domain
registration company redirect old-domain.com to new-domain.com (using
web forwarding, I think they call it). Then, I can register my
www.new-domain.com with the search engines.

Is that the best strategy?

At the moment my "new-domain.com" is the main URL of my server space
with the new host, but they allow me a number of subdomains too. So I
could have my "old-domain.com" as a subdomain of "new-domain.com". I
could then have an index.html page at "old-domain.com" linking to the
main portion of the site at "new-domain.com". Would that be a better
way to do it?

Thank you for any advice,

Al W
