It seems that a custom 404 page would make the website user's
experience more productive on those occasions when a link is outdated
or a URL is inaccurately typed.

What affect, if any, does a custom 404 page with .htaccess redirect
have on search engine optimization? What effect would a custom 404
page have on the Google Webmaster Tools (formerly SiteMaps) reporting?
